Travelers advised to avoid travel to Japan
In the wake of a powerful earthquake measuring 8.9 in magnitude in norther Japan today, March 11th, 2011, the Department of State is advising travelers to avoid tourism to the area at this time. Airports in Tokyo are currently close and other airports around the country may also close as aftershocks and other emergencies may occur. Public transportation is interrupted in addition or may have restricted access. Unfortunately damage has occurred in and around urban areas making unnecessary travel restricted as well.
For the travelers that were in flight when the event occurred, now is a time for waiting. All planes which landed are now holding, leaving passengers stranded until they are cleared to take back off. As difficult as a situation like this may be for weary travelers, most are holding their own just fine, understanding that things like this, though disturbing, happens.
According to the latest from Travel.State.Gov, travelers should avoid all unnecessary travel to the country of Japan until damage and conditions can be stabilized in parts of the country. The travel alert is expected to expire on April, 1, 2011.
In case of emergency – How to be prepared from Bill Bailey Travel Club
In cases such as this, it is good to know what to do and how to prepare in case it occurs during your travels.
You are advised to leave your itinerary with someone you trust along with contact information. You can also register with the U.S. department of State to ensure that the government can assist you easier if need be.
In situations such as this, many airlines will also make exceptions to the rules in order to accommodate you. For example, many airlines are issuing waivers for those already scheduled to fly to Japan. These waivers allow travelers to postpone their trip without incurring a fee.
