Historic Villages to Visit in the US

The United States is full of uniquely designed villages and towns that can transport visitors back in time and remind them of a simpler time in our history. Here are a few villages on the Southwestern side of the country that offer guests a glimpse into our nation’s past.

American West Heritage Center: Utah

Historic daily adventures await you and your traveling companions at the American West Heritage Center. With multiple venues onsite you can learn about Native American culture at the Native American Encampment, learn about the fur trade at Mountain Man Camp, try pulling a handcart at the Pioneer Settlement, and learn about life on a farm at the Jensen Historical Farm. Admission prices vary, depending on the age of the guest and the duration of your stay.

Heritage Square: Arizona

If you are visiting Phoenix, Arizona, stop in and visit the Victorian district of Heritage Square. Located in the heart of the city this collection of original Victorian structures from the city’s early days is all that remains of the structures that once populated this town. The most popular house, the Rosson House, is a fully restored house built in 1895 that has been painstakingly renovated to resemble its original glory. Tours are available weekly, Wednesdays through Sundays.

Route 66 Historical Village: Oklahoma

If you are traveling on Route 66 and find yourself in Oklahoma, head over to the Historic Southwest Boulevard district to check out the Route 66 Historical Village. This open air museum is home to fully restored remnants from the city’s early days. Visitors can’t miss this fun attraction, which seeks to educate and inspire others to learn the history of Tulsa’s oil, refining and transportation industries.

Ferndale, The Victorian Village: California

Recently named one of America’s prettiest towns by Forbes, this thriving dairy community is located in Northern California between the two redwood forests. Visitors can explore the old-fashioned mercantile, antique shops, galleries and specialty stores. They can visit with a blacksmith, watch the local chocolatier make handmade candies, and sleep in one of the elegant bed and breakfast inns available in town.
