History In Southern Michigan With Bill Bailey Travel

Posted on 12.27.12

historyGreenfield Village is located inside the Henry Ford Museum complex.  This is one of the largest indoor and outdoor museum complexes in all of America.  Greenfield Village encompasses 240 acres, only 90 of which is used as an area of attraction and the rest is forested with a river and there are pastures for sheep and horses to be kept.

Greenfield Village’s focal point is to show how Americans have lived and worked since the founding of our fair country.  This includes actual abodes as well as a collection of craft buildings that show how materials were produced over the years.  These include pottery shops, glass blowing, and tin shops. Many of these buildings also incorporate demonstrations of the production of the materials and many of them are for sale. Of the buildings that are located in the village, nearly one hundred of them were moved here from their original location and arranged in a village setting. Some of these buildings are the Wright Brothers bicycle shop and home from Dayton, Ohio, Henry Ford’s birthplace home, a replica of Thomas Edison’s laboratory complex from Menlo Park in New Jersey, and many other buildings of note in our esteemed history.

Greenfield Village is a pleasure to visit any time of year and they have many events that take place here throughout the year. There is a Civil War Remembrance.  This takes place on Memorial Day weekend and features more than 400 people that are Civil War reenactors. Of course there must be car shows, as this takes place on the Henry Ford Museum complex.  There are two car shows that take place annually at Greenfield Village.  Motor Muster takes place on Father’s Day weekend and features more than 600 cars that were built between 1932 and 1976. Salute to America is an event that takes place for four nights around the Fourth of July.  The Detroit Symphony Orchestra plays on Walnut Grove to more than 5,000 attendees each evening. Of course there are seasonal events that take place at the village during Halloween as well as Christmastime. Normal hours of operation for Greenfield Village are Friday through Sunday from 9:30am until 5:00pm.  Of course this does not include special events are any of the activities that are scheduled for the evening.  Admission to the museum is $22 for adults, $16 for children, $21 for seniors, and children under the age of 5 are free.
