Bill Bailey Litchfield Illinois From the Great River Road to the Ohio River Scenic Byway, Illinois is home to many scenic byways known for their stunning history, culture and amazing destinations along the way. For those living in Litchfield or even visiting Litchfield, easily the most well-known and popular of its many popular byways is Illinois’ Historic Route 66. Making its way diagonally across the state from Chicago to the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge in Madison, this Scenic Byway is truly not only just one of the most historic and influential Scenic Byways in the country. Since 1926, travelers have been making their way across the country in seek of new experiences and new places. Said to have helped define the growth of our nation, this amazing road made it possible for migrants to find a new way of life, truckers to get products more easily from one side of the country to the other and later, millions of travelers and thrill seekers a place to relax and enjoy the road. In Illinois, this historic road has more than its fair share of sites and attractions which help tell the story of this All-American Road.

Litchfield is home to two of the Illinois sections most historic sites including the Artison Café and the Skyview Drive In Theater. The Artison has been named by one noted author as the “best the old road has to offer”. Serving food since 1924, it is a tradition handed down in the family for generations. The Sky View Drive in is the last remaining drive in on the Original Route 66 and is still showing movies today.

Just two of the over 40 historic sites which line this section of Historic Route 66, it is easy to see why millions make the journey to these and other sites along the Mother Road each year.
